Overview

Three airports in Kansai

Osaka International Airport, known as Itami, has a park built for watching planes. Itami Skypark runs about 1.2 km along the west side of the runway and is free to enter. At the south end of the runway, landing planes pass low over the Senri River bank, about 2 km on foot from Hankyu Sone Station.

Kansai International Airport sits on an island in the bay. Sky View, a viewing building with the Sky Museum inside, is a free shuttle bus ride from Terminal 1. Across the water, Rinku Park looks back at the airport island and the bridge that joins it to the shore.

Kobe Airport has a rooftop observation deck, with the runway and the sea to the south and Port Island and the Rokko mountains to the north. I've been to all three airports myself, and I've photographed planes since 2009.

Highlights

  • Watch take-offs from Big Sky Hill at Itami Skypark
  • Stand under landing planes on the Senri River bank
  • Visit Sky View at Kansai Airport
  • Cross from Kansai Airport to Kobe on the Bay Shuttle ferry (full day)
  • Stay for the sunset and the runway lights on Kobe Airport's rooftop deck
Routes

Pick the length that suits your day

Half day (3 to 4 hours): Itami

The Skypark beside the runway, and the riverbank at its south end.

  1. Itami Skyparkby bus from Hankyu Itami or JR Itami Station.
  2. Big Sky Hill and Wing Hillthe north entrance is the best-known spot for take-offs, and the Wing Hill deck is as wide as a 777's wing.
  3. Sky Terracethe building at the central entrance, with an observation deck, a goods shop and a take-out cafe.
  4. Senri River bankabout 2 km on foot from Hankyu Sone Station, for landings close overhead.

The riverbank has no toilets and no shade, so we take a break before we walk there. On a later start, we can finish on the terminal's rooftop deck for the runway lights.

Half day (3 to 4 hours): Kansai Airport

The viewing building on the island, then the shore across the water.

  1. Sky Viewby free shuttle bus from Terminal 1, with the Sky Museum inside.
  2. Rinku Park and Marble Beacha short walk from Nankai Rinku-Town Station, facing the airport island, for take-offs and the bridge.

Sky View's hours change with the season, so I check them before the day. The sea wind at Rinku Park is strong, so bring a layer.

Half day (3 to 4 hours): Kobe Airport

The rooftop deck and the indoor Sky Court, into the evening.

  1. Port Liner from Sannomiyathe line out to the airport.
  2. Rooftop deckthe runway and the sea to the south, Port Island and the Rokko mountains to the north.
  3. Sky Court on the 3rd floorviewing behind glass, for a wet or windy day.
  4. Sunset and runway lightsthe sun goes down to the west of the runway.

Full day (7 to 8 hours)

Two airports, or all three if time allows.

  1. Kansai AirportSky View in the morning.
  2. Bay Shuttle ferry to Kobe Airport1,880 yen one way for an adult.
  3. Kobe Airportlunch and the rooftop deck.
  4. Itami, if time allowsfor the Skypark or the terminal deck at dusk. I'll work out the connection with you before the day.

Kansai Airport and Itami are also linked by limousine bus, about 1 hour 10 minutes (2,200 yen). If the sea is rough, we can take the limousine bus from Kansai Airport to Kobe Sannomiya instead (about 1 hour 5 minutes, 2,200 yen), then the Port Liner.

Details

Before you book

Included

  • Sho as your private guide for the length you book, in English (or Japanese, if you prefer)
  • A route planned for your group before the day
  • Food stops checked ahead for any allergies you tell me about

Not included

  • Train, bus and ferry fares
  • Food and drinks

Good to know

  • Itami Skypark is free and has no regular closing days. Weekends get crowded.
  • Which end of Itami's runway the planes land at depends on the wind, so I confirm the plan on the morning.
  • At Kobe, keep tripods clear of aisles, benches, stairs and spots along the fence.
  • Photos aren't allowed at security, immigration or customs at Kobe Airport.
  • The ferry can rock in strong wind. If the sea is rough, we take the limousine bus instead.
  • Rain plan: the Sky Museum at Kansai Airport and the Sky Court at Kobe Airport are indoors.
  • I look after the day itself. Train tickets, hotels and any entry tickets you want to book ahead are yours to arrange. I'll tell you exactly where and when to meet me.
  • We get around by train, bus, ferry and on foot, the same way people here do. I don't drive guests, and I'll show you how the ticket machines work as we go.

Sho, your guide

In January 2011, in my last year of junior high, I left Japan for Brisbane. I stayed until I'd finished university in March 2020. That's nine years of Australian school, uni and part-time jobs.

I speak English and Japanese without any trouble, and I don't get shy around people from other cultures. What I care about most on the day is simple: that you're having a good time.

I'm based in Yokohama. I've been photographing planes since 2009. Since moving back to Japan in 2020, photography has taken me to airports and towns all over the country. Every area I guide is somewhere I've been myself.

I have a serious kiwi fruit allergy (anaphylaxis) and react to some fruit in the rose family. So I check our food stops with the restaurants before the day. If there's anything you can't eat, tell me when you first get in touch.

  • Comfortable in English and Japanese
  • Has been to every area on this site
  • Checks food stops ahead of the day

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which airport should we pick for a half day?

Itami, if you'd like planes close overhead. Kansai or Kobe, if you'd like the sea in your photos. Tell me what you want to see and I'll suggest one.

Can we see all three in one day?

Sometimes. On a full day we can usually do two, and all three if time allows. Kansai to Kobe is a ferry ride, and Kansai to Itami is a limousine bus.

Which runway will we see at Itami?

That depends on the wind on the day, so I'll explain it on the spot rather than promise it in advance.
