Meeting pointHaneda Airport Terminal 1·2 Station (Keikyu Line), at the ticket gates. If you're staying at Terminal 3, we can start there instead.
Overview

An airport worth a day of its own

Haneda has four runways and runs 24 hours. The wind decides how they're used: with a south wind all four are in use, and with a north wind three. Either way, up to 80 take-offs and landings an hour are possible.

All three terminals have free observation decks. The decks at Terminals 1 and 2 are open 6:30 am to 10 pm, and the Terminal 3 deck is open 24 hours. Terminal 2 also has FLIGHT DECK TOKYO, an indoor viewing floor, open 5 am to 11 pm.

The airport opened as Tokyo Airport in 1931. Near Tenkubashi Station stands the Haneda Peace Torii, first given to the old Anamori Inari Shrine in 1929. In September 1945 about 3,000 local people were ordered to leave within 48 hours. The torii stayed on airport land until it was moved to its present spot in 1999.

Highlights

  • Watch planes from the free decks at all three terminals
  • Stay dry at FLIGHT DECK TOKYO, the indoor viewing floor in Terminal 2
  • Look for Mt Fuji from Terminal 1 on clear, cool mornings
  • Visit the Haneda Peace Torii and hear how the airport grew
  • Walk Edo Koji, the old-Edo-style street of shops in Terminal 3
  • Add a hangar tour you've booked (half and full day)

Your guide

I'm Sho, and I'll be your guide

Sho, your guide

In January 2011, in my last year of junior high, I left Japan for Brisbane. I stayed until I'd finished university in March 2020. That's nine years of Australian school, uni and part-time jobs.

I speak English and Japanese without any trouble, and I don't get shy around people from other cultures. What I care about most on the day is simple: that you're having a good time.

I'm based in Yokohama. I've been photographing planes since 2009. Since moving back to Japan in 2020, photography has taken me to airports and towns all over the country. Every area I guide is somewhere I've been myself.

I have a serious kiwi fruit allergy (anaphylaxis) and react to some fruit in the rose family. So I check our food stops with the restaurants before the day. If there's anything you can't eat, tell me when you first get in touch.

  • Comfortable in English and Japanese
  • Has been to every area on this site
  • Checks food stops ahead of the day

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can we see Mt Fuji?

Sometimes. The government's airport office lists the Terminal 1 6th-floor and rooftop decks and the Terminal 3 5th-floor deck as Fuji viewpoints. Clear, cool days are best, especially in the morning.

Which runway will we see?

That depends on the wind on the day, so I'll explain it on the deck rather than promise it in advance.
