Atami, a hot-spring town on the sea

Shopping streets start right outside the station, with an old villa and a shrine up the hill. Here's what I'd show you.

What I point out on the way

Sho, your guide

I spent nine years in Brisbane, from junior high to the end of university, and I guide in English or Japanese. I check our food stops with each shop before the day.

Kiunkaku
Sho's note

Kiunkaku

Built as a villa in 1919 and an inn from 1947. Dazai Osamu and Tanizaki Jun'ichiro stayed here. Entry is 610 yen, and it's closed on Wednesdays.

Atami Station
Sho's note

Atami Station

We meet here. Nakamise and Heiwa-dori start right outside.

Sho's note

Oyu Geyser

It stopped on its own in 1923 and now erupts artificially about every five minutes, about 20 minutes' walk from the station.

Nakamise and Heiwa-dori, the two shopping streets by the station, have shops that have been trading for 60 to 70 years. Dried fish is the thing to look for.

Kinomiya Shrine has a camphor tree more than 2,100 years old and 24 metres around the trunk. One lap of it is said to add a year to your life.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is the geyser natural?

Not any more. It stopped on its own in 1923, was kept as a city cultural property from 1962 and now erupts artificially.

What if it rains?

The MOA Museum of Art and Kiunkaku keep us indoors for most of the day.
